Ear
surgery or otoplasty is usually done to set
prominent or protruding ears back closer to
the head or to reduce the size of large ears.
Other birth abnormalities of the ears can be
corrected as well. The operation is usually
done on children between the ages of four and
fourteen. Ears are almost fully grown by age
four, and the earlier the surgery, the less
teasing and ridicule the child will have to
endure. |

THE PROCEDURE
This procedure is performed as an out-patient
procedure, using IV sedation and local anesthesia for
adults. For children general anesthesia is recommended.
The procedure involves an incision placed behind the
ear in order to sculpt the cartilage and bend it back
towards the head. Non removable stitches are used to
help maintain the new shape and create natural looking
fold. In most cases ear surgery will leave a faint scar
hidden in the back of the ear.
WHAT WILL MY RECOVERY BE LIKE?
An elastic head band is worn for several
weeks following surgery to keep the ear in its new position.
Normal activities can usually be resumed within a week.
