Vascular and pigmented
lesions constitute the two most common types of birthmarks.
Various types of lasers are being successfully used
for a dramatic improvement in many of these lesions.
Vascular
lesions:
Skin blemishes due
to abnormal blood vessels located directly under your
skin’s surface that give the skin red color are called
vascular lesions. Port wine stains, strawberry hemangiomas
and spider veins are all forms of vascular lesions.
Pigmented
lesions:
Pigmented lesions are
caused by a proliferation of melanocytes (cells that
manufacture melanin – the dark pigment in the skin)
in the skin. Most of us have some form of pigmented
lesion like brown age spots, freckles and moles.
Non-pigmented
lesions:
Lesions without color
such as warts and skin tags can also be treated by lasers.
Not all lesions need
to be treated or removed. Many small nevi are considered
to be marks of beauty and can be left alone. In
your initial consultation we will discuss whether laser
or surgery is best suited for treatment of your particular
condition, and if is to be treated by laser, what kind
of laser is best suited for this job.
HOW MANY
TREATMENTS ARE REQUIRED?
The number of laser
treatments you'll need depends largely upon the size,
location, depth and color of your lesion. A child with
a large dark and deeper birthmark may need six to ten
laser treatments to achieve satisfactory results. Only
one or two treatment may be needed to remove some small
spider veins and age spots on the face. Treatments should
be 4-6 weeks apart.
WHAT
RESULTS CAN YOU EXPECT?
Most patients will
see a dramatic improvement in their vascular and pigmented
lesion. However as with any surgical procedure, there
is always a possibility that only minor changes will
occur and in rare cases there is no response.
