Rhytidectomy(Face Lift)

WHEN WRINKLES TAKE OVER

Facial wrinkles, sagging skin, laxity in the jowls and neck are part of the aging process. Not too long ago, a face lift was considered by many to be reserved for movie stars and celebrities. Today face lift surgery is well accepted and one of the most frequently performed cosmetic procedures.

A face lift, also called rhytidectomy, smoothes the loose skin of the face and neck, tightens underlying tissue, removes excess fat and restores more pleasing contours to your face and neck

.During your initial consultation, you will be asked to look in a mirror and point out those areas of your face which you would like to see improved. We will also discuss additional procedures that may be performed along with face lift in order to address all your concerns and enhance the results of your surgery. For example, the face lift is frequently combined with eyelid surgery, brow lift, nose reshaping, laser resurfacing and the use of skin care products.

THE PROCEDURE

This procedure is performed in our surgical facility using IV sedation and local anesthesia. If desired by the patient, general anesthesia may be used. The incisions for the face lift are placed in front of and behind the ear, along the natural creases, so the scar will be hidden and less visible. Loose skin is separated from underlying tissue and is pulled up and back and excess skin is removed. In addition, muscles underneath are also tightened to restore a more youthful foundation. If required, suctioning may also be done to remove excess fatty tissue below the chin and the upper neck areas. Fine sutures are used to close the incision.

WHAT WILL MY RECOVERY BE LIKE?

Some bruising and swelling is expected during recovery. Pain is normally minimal and can be controlled with medication. All sutures will be removed in 5-7 days. Usually, you can resume non-stressful activities during the first week. After about 10 days, you can resume most normal activities including the use of facial cosmetics. For several weeks after the surgery, patients are advised to minimize exposure to the sun and to wear sunscreen during day time.

ARE THERE RISKS?

Fortunately, significant complications from face lifts are very infrequent. Every year, thousands of people undergo successful face lift surgery without any major problems and are pleased with the results. Anyone considering surgery, however, should be aware of both the risks and the benefits. You can help minimize certain risks by following your doctor's advice and instructions both before and after your surgery.

HOW LONG WILL THE RESULTS LAST?

How long the results of your face lift will last will depend on many variables, including heredity and lifestyle factors as well as the initial condition of the patient. Even though the aging process continues, patients are usually happy with their appearance for 8-10 years following a face lift, when the procedure can be repeated. In general younger patients will have longer-lasting results. Your plastic surgeon will help select the surgical technique that he feels will obtain the best outcome for you.

YOUR NEW LOOK

A facelift can “set back the clock”, making you appear younger and fresher by improving the most visible signs of aging. It helps you look as good as you feel, and may enhance your self confidence in the process. Most patients are delighted with their more attractive younger-looking appearance. Men as well as women can benefit from face lift surgery.
